Digital strategy - Ask the Community
Josh asks "Does anyone have any over-arching non-profit digital strategy approaches or templates that they recommend? As a not-for-profit our digital presence is spreading in a number of directions for example increasing our reach in the community from a marketing perspective to building online communities that foster inclusion in their own right. Most of the digital strategy approaches I’ve found are sales or fundraising focused, like the one I’ve attached….(log in to see attachment)."

Google Apps/Gmail - Ask the Community
Simon asks "I was under the impression that it was free but.. not yet available for Non Profits outside of the US… Shame..! I checked with the department (DHS) about using such products, considering the information is stored globally and will not fall under the same privacy laws, they advised us that we should not use cloud based products (Yahoo, GMail, Hotmail, etc) Have you been able to overcome this issue?"

Acceptable use of ICT policy - Ask the Community
Kate says "...We are revising our policy for all staff that explains how staff should correctly utillise the organisation’s technology resources. We thought we’d share our current draft in case it is of use to the sector (as we believe that every organisation should have a policy that covers these issues). Let us know your thoughts, or if you have a policy you like, please share it.(log in to see attachment)"

Online SMS text messaging services - Ask the Community
Alex asks "Hi everyone, I have another email-to-SMS query, but from the client point of view. I have a client who’s very email-savvy, but not able to use phone/texting due in-part to accessibility issues. I’m wondering if there are any free email-to-SMS services out there because there are occasions where the client may need to contact a worker in the field that doesn’t have email access..."

Help! Need a good, versatile and CHEAP option for online resource management! Any ideas? - What's new, what's out there?
Alyson asks "Hi everyone. I am looking for an online program which will help me itemise itinery and track its use. Perhaps by some sort of “scanning out” technology by identified staff members. I would use this for ipads, keys, phones and other equipment. Perhaps even staff training DVS, etc. Any ideas?"

Managing iPads - Ask the Community
Rheinard says "Hi @rosecrosland, I’ve been managing a set of iPads using an old version of the “iPhone Configuration Utility”, because the newer iOS Configuration tools did not cater for us living here in Australia. However, now Apple does provide volume purchasing (log in to see web-link). This means that the new utility will do the trick. Ideally, you would want to have a docking station with a computer (running iTunes with the configuration utility) attached. This is the most seamless approach, but also the most costly. (We’re aiming to move towards this this year as I am the one at the moment having to sync batches of iPads at a time… would love to stop doing this!). I hope this little bit of insight is helpful."

Managing iPads - Ask the Community
Rose asks "My organisation has embraced iPads for our clients’ use as communication tools and in adult literacy programs. The number we manage continues to grow and I was wondering was sort of systems (incl. hardware & personnel) are being used out there to manage both the configuration of the iPads and Apps management. We are a multi site organisation in 3 suburbs of northeast Melbourne."

Being open source you can download it for free and host it yourself or they offer a range of SaaS plans starting at around $50 per month. There’s an online demo on the website so you can go in and play around with it before you commit to anything.Hope you find something that fits your needs, good luck."

How to best compare website statistics - Ask the Community
Geoff says "You can only benchmark stats if similar organisations will share stats with you.Be aware that there are going to be differences in the ways your sites are set up that will still make figures difficult to compare. For example, if you put contact details on your home page, you will get far fewer hits on your contact page, and hence less total hits as a result. But visitors will be happier because it was easy to find. The better strategy is to set your site up well, read your stats, use results to help make changes, and watch what happens to the patterns of user behaviour...Two more things: the site must work well on mobiles, and almost always the website is a part, not the whole, of a good promotion strategy..."

Tracking the results of your social media activities - Social Media
Mark says "...Good article looking at the four types of metrics you want to consider tracking when measuring the results of your communications, basically: who is consuming my content, who is sharing my content, who then goes on to begin an action, who completes an action. The article, like most, talks about it in commercial terms, that is; lead generation and sales, which is the bottom line for business, but for many of us, attracting service users isn't necessarily our ultimate goal, but I think when you translate ‘lead generation’ as getting people to take the first steps in a call to action, and ‘sales’ as action completed the lessons are the same."

Still looking at case management systems - ICT & Case Management Systems
Ruth asks "Hi All, I am still looking at CS.net for a case management system and like it a lot. Am looking for a more HACC EACH and community care type management system also. I want to have a central universal system that has ‘portals’ of many different communities that can manage their own portal and report into it whilst meeting all compliance measures. So one road, many cul-de-sacs.that can be replicated per community added. Any suggestions?"

It also helps me understand the needs of others more and learn a whole lot of new things I have not considered before. It also happens to be my basis for debates...?"

Alternatives to Google Groups - Ask the Commuity
Gordon asks "We are looking for a mail list or list server solution for sharing among an extended network. It can have a web site/forum but it MUST be usable from the users mail inbox. Google Groups works perfectly. However many in the network do not approve of Google’s privacy policies and would prefer alternatives. Mailman is 15 years old software that does the job but is not supported by some ISPs including our preferred provider.
Most of the other solutions (ning, buddypress out of hte box etc) require people to remember log ons and/or do not give enough control over how mail messages are received. Any ideas greatly appreciated!!"

Google - Ask the Community

It all looks good on the outside but we have one concern. If we set up a google docs (now drive) spreadsheet with names and address of people who would like to subscribe then how secure is this? Does google own the information? Will our subscribers be bombarded with emails they do not want via google?"

Advice needed for tablet purchase for staff - Ask the Community
Anthony asks "Our organisation is looking to purchase tablets for each staff member (4 in total). There has been debate around staff preferences for certain brands & models and making the shortlist is the latest ipad from Apple & the Nexus 7 from Asus. Our staff is often out of the office at network meetings & events and would use tablets to browse the internet, access cloud services (dropbox, webmail, google calendar, skype/facetime, social media, etc), type meeting notes and adopt new workflow processes to assist a semi-mobile workforce in the future.

Governance ideas for a ”virtual” advisory group - Ask the Community
Mark says "Hi Cath, yes, this iTaNGO Community of Practice site was developed with Wordpress’ Buddypress plugin / templating and can be installed and customised with reasonable ease (though you’ll likely need a web developer to install it for you). The topic of online platforms for facilitating group work and discussion is being tackled by the social media community of practice group over here (log in to see web-link). They have developed a list of platforms and how they compare for different features and pricing in the case where the service charges a fee. Hope this helps."
